According to Giving More Than Money, a 2015 collaborative study between Wells Fargo Philanthropic Services and BoardSource, many board members do not understand what is expected of them when joining a board. Among board members surveyed, only 52 percent fully understood the financial commitment they would be responsible for.
Giving More Than Money also found that a high level of satisfaction was strongly correlated with board members’ levels of commitment to, and financial support of, the organizations they serve. A strong orientation program ensures that board members understand expectations and sets the tone for accountable, and enjoyable, board service.
