And yet, according to Leading with Intent: A National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices, only 53 percent of nonprofit boards have a stand-alone governance committee or combined governance/nominating committee. Serving on a nonprofit board is an honor but you have to make sure the fit is right. Here’s some advice from a BoardSource board member on how to do that and avoid a bad board experience.

In April, Jim Schwarz, senior governance consultant, worked with 14 NeighborWorks leaders in Los Angeles, California. There’s more to come in next month’s issue. Anne Wallestad to speak at upcoming conferences. BoardSource's president & CEO will be presenting a session titled "What Companies Need to Know: Making the Most of Employee Engagement in Nonprofit Board Leadership" at Service Unites: Conference on Volunteering and Service on June 26 in Detroit. The conference is convened by Points of Light. Anne also will co-present a session on board advocacy at the 2016 Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers conference taking place in Indianapolis on July 20.
