Why Organizational Values are So Awesome…

… and sexy. Yes, Vu Le, blogger and executive director of Rainier Valley Corps, may think of values in a little different way than most, but there’s no denying this: Every board should make certain that the organization is being guided by an explicit set of ethical values. Don’t miss out on reading Vu’s unique perspective on Values — with a capital V.

Wanted: Fundraising Expertise

Your board is committed to becoming a fundraising board but doesn’t have a member with enough expertise to lead the charge. Should it recruit and onboard a fund development expert? Perhaps someone who works at another nonprofit as its development director? A governance consultant weighs in for those boards considering this strategy.

Calling all CEOs/executive directors AND board chairs!
It’s important that we hear from you. Please share your boardroom experiences with us by completing the 2016 Leading with Intent: A National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices survey. If you didn’t receive an invitation to participate on May 10 (check your inbox) with a link that is all your own, you can access the survey now. All who complete the survey will be thanked with a free BoardSource publication and, who knows, perhaps you’ll win one of two free registrations (as well as two nights’ lodging) to the 2017 BoardSource Leadership Forum in Seattle.

BoardSource joined 21 of its capacity-building colleagues in releasing an open letter to the philanthropic community this week. The letter encourages greater investment in organizations that exist for the sole purpose of strengthening the resilience, effectiveness, and overall impact of the nonprofit sector — organizations such as BoardSource. Prior to its public release, BoardSource shared the letter with its funders to keep them apprised of our efforts and to thank them for their investment in our work and, in turn, you.

Embarking on strategic planning in the near future? When BoardSource decided to engage in strategic planning a year ago, we were skeptical about what a traditional strategic plan can and cannot accomplish. Determined to avoid in-depth predictions about strategies and tactics two, three, or even five years down the road, we sought a framework that would help us make decisions, plan, and prioritize our efforts for the foreseeable future. Now, with our new plan in hand, our board and senior leadership have reflected on and documented what we consider to be the key strengths and learnings from the process we followed.
